What the county requires
Currituck County issues a Beach Parking Permit for the 4x4 area north of Corolla. It is required to park on the beach during the permit season. Driving the beach requires the ordinary things — a registered, licensed, insured vehicle — rather than the permit itself.
That distinction matters less than it sounds, because nobody drives eleven miles of sand without stopping. If your day involves getting out of the truck, in season you want the permit.

The season got shorter in 2026. The county board voted in February to trim it — it used to run from late April into early October, and it now starts the second Saturday of May and ends the last Saturday in September. If you are working from an older guide, that is the line that is out of date.
The 300-a-week cap is the real constraint
Three hundred visitor permits a week, on a beach that a lot of people want to be on in July. They can and do run out. If your trip falls in the middle of the season, buying early is worth more than saving the fifty dollars for later.
If you are renting a 4x4
Rental companies hand the beach parking pass to their guests, so this is usually not something you buy separately. Beach4x4 includes it with the vehicle — worth checking with whoever you rent from rather than assuming either way.
Two more rules worth knowing before you park
- No parking for the first 1.5 miles north of the ramp. Drive past that stretch before you look for a spot.
- After dark, the whole beach is a driving lane — parking areas included. Take your things, level every hole and sandcastle, and get off the sand.
