Where the ramp is
At the north end of NC-12 in Corolla, past the shops and the lighthouse turn. You will know it — the road ends, there is a ramp onto the sand, and the vehicles going up it are all four-wheel drive. There is no parking at the ramp itself, so the plan has to be to drive the beach, not to park at the edge of it and walk.
Air down first
Soft sand is the whole game. Full highway pressure and you will dig in within a few hundred feet of the ramp; let the tires down and the same vehicle floats over it. Air down before you go up the ramp, not after you are stuck on it, and air back up when you come off.
Take the drive slowly at first if you have not done it. The wet sand near the water line is firm and easy; the dry sand higher up is where people get buried.
The rules that are actually enforced

That last line is the one people miss. Once it is dark, the sand you were sitting on all afternoon is a road. Currituck asks you to take your things with you and flatten every hole and sandcastle before you go, because a driver cannot see either of them. If your dog dug a crater — and he did — fill it in.
Tide, not clock
The beach narrows at high tide and there are stretches where the firm driving line disappears under water. Going out on a falling tide and coming home before the next high is the habit that keeps people out of trouble. Check the tide before you go rather than after.
Bringing the dog
Dogs are welcome on this beach year-round. What is not true — and blogs repeat it constantly — is that Currituck allows a dog off the leash under voice control. The county has no voice-control exception: off your own property a dog is on a leash, in a vehicle, or in an enclosure, countywide, with no season where it relaxes.
