The vehicle
Real four-wheel drive with low range and ground clearance. An all-wheel-drive crossover is not the same thing and will not get you far past the ramp. Front-wheel drive will not leave it at all.

In the truck
- A tire gauge and a way to air back up. A compressor is the difference between a five-minute stop and a long, expensive afternoon.
- A shovel. Most stucks are dug out, not towed out.
- A tow strap with proper recovery points — not a rope and a bumper.
- A jack that works on sand, with something flat to stand it on.
- More water than you think. For everyone, dog included.
- Shade you can put up. There is none out there, at all.
For the dog
- A harness seatbelt or a travel crate. A soft-top with the windows down, a beach with no fences, and a dog who has just seen a bird is the one combination out here that ends badly — and it ends fast, because there is nowhere for him to stop running.
- A leash he cannot back out of. He is on it any time he is out of the vehicle.
- Water and a collapsible bowl, offered more often than feels necessary. Salt water is the thing that ruins the drive home.
- A towel or three. Sand plus wet dog plus a two-hour drive.
- Bags, and a current rabies tag on the collar.
- Paw balm if he is soft-footed, and the ten-second sand test either way.
The ten-second test. Put the back of your hand flat on the sand and hold it for ten seconds. If you have to lift it, so would he. Drive down to the wet sand and walk him there instead — the temperature difference between dry and wet sand a few feet apart is enormous.
Before you leave the pavement
- Air down at the top of the ramp, not after you are stuck.
- Check the tide — go out on a falling one.
- In season, have the beach parking permit displayed.
- Fuel up in Corolla. There is nothing north of the ramp.
